We have two goals in mind when treating cancer patients. The first is to eliminate their pain. They, unlike most patients, can suffer pain from their underlying disease process and additionally from the treatment of the condition. It is a terrible reality that they suffer. The second is to keep them lucid and feeling like themselves and not drugged up or sedated.
Don’t Miss The Important Moments
A delicate balance must be struck between the treatment of the pain and the patient’s sedation level. In many instances, patients have been treated with pain medication and sedated to the point that they cannot interact with their families or significant others. That is the worst of both worlds for the patient and the family. You are depriving the family of the ability to interact with their loved ones in the final days of their lives. It is bad for the patient because they can’t communicate messages that are important for them to express in their final days.

Treatment of the patient’s pain is frequently very difficult due to the nature and complexity of the pain. In many instances, the pain can be visceral, neurologic, and musculoskeletal simultaneously. This requires more sophisticated strategies than simple oral or transdermal narcotics. Technology and research have provided us with new medications and new delivery methods. This has allowed us to customize the patient’s treatment regimen to maximize the patient’s pain relief, return their ability to interact with loved ones, and reclaim their life.
Chemotherapy or Radiation-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy
Peripheral nerve disorders are a common complication of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and certain other drug therapies. Chemotherapy can cause the degeneration of peripheral nerves. This can lead to more serious conditions such as peripheral, autonomic, or focal neuropathies. Some symptoms of these conditions include numbness, weakness, burning sensations, and other forms of nerve pain.
